Cross-border route
Cross-border route
A hiking trail along the border full of wonderful nature and heritage.
On this occasion, we are addressing hiking lovers, we present “La Transfrontera”, an exciting hiking route that runs along the border with our neighbor Portugal and shows us many of the best treasures that La Campiña de Valencia hides. of Alcántara, both at an environmental and heritage level.
We are talking about a circular route, of about 24 kilometers with a duration of about 5-6 hours, completely signposted and approved by the Extremeña Mountain and Climbing Federation (FEXME), which for the most experts we leave you the link to its technical sheet. Officially, it is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in April (we leave you the poster for this year’s 2024 edition). There are hundreds of hikers, coming from many parts of Spain and Portugal, who love to do the route that same day, since apart from enjoying the route, they marvel at the explosion of spring throughout the route. Therefore, write the date in your diaries!!!
This tour begins and ends at the Santa María de Guadalupe Hostel. In the first section, we enter the mountains reaching the so-called “Houses of Doubt”, a place on the border with Portugal, and then reach the district of El Pino. From here, the route will take us to “El Cortijo de la Paja”, an enclave that forms the southern limit of La Campiña de Valencia de Alcántara. Next, we will go down to the district of Jola, where we can pass through the stream that bears the same name. From Jola, we will go up again and then go down directly to the area of “El Jiniebro”, at the foot of the Puerto de Aguas Claras and which serves as an approach to the district of La Aceña de la Borrega, from where we will continue towards one of the sections of the route with the most environmental and heritage value. In this part of the route, we can enjoy the Berrocal de Data Natural Monument and three of the best preserved Dolmens (El Mellizo, Data I and Data II), if you want to know more about this part of the route, I leave you the link that We publish about this area. In the last stage of the route, we will cross again through the district of El Pino and after one kilometer we will arrive again at the Santa María de Guadalupe Hostel.
We want to emphasize that despite the great heritage and environmental wealth, and the wonderful panoramic views that your retinas will capture, this is a route for people accustomed to this type of activity, since apart from its length, it has particularly difficult sections.
For those who live this experience, our recommendation is to finish it by enjoying the fantastic “borderline” gastronomy in any of the establishments that you can find in Valencia de Alcántara and its Campiña and enjoy an after-dinner meal in company remembering moments lived on the route.
Finally, if you are looking for rural accommodation to live this experience and discover the rest of the destination, we offer you fully equipped accommodation with great comfort so that you do not lack anything during your stay.
